MercadoLibre Ends Mercado Coin Program After Four Years as Crypto Rewards Strategy Shifts

MercadoLibre is shutting down its in house cryptocurrency Mercado Coin, bringing an end to its four year experiment with tokenized rewards across its e commerce ecosystem. The company confirmed that the program will officially conclude on April 17, after which users will no longer be able to buy, sell, or earn cashback in the token. The move reflects a strategic shift as the firm reassesses how digital assets fit into its broader platform, even as it continues to maintain exposure to cryptocurrencies through other initiatives.

Mercado Coin was originally launched in 2022 in Brazil as a rewards based token designed to incentivize purchases on the platform. Built on the Ethereum network using the ERC 20 standard, the token allowed users to earn cashback in digital form when making transactions. These tokens could then be reused for purchases or converted into local currency, creating a circular incentive model within the ecosystem. The initiative later expanded to other markets, positioning the company as an early adopter of crypto based loyalty systems in large scale retail platforms.

Users holding Mercado Coin have been given a transition period to manage their balances before the shutdown deadline. They can choose to sell their tokens, use them as purchase credits, or allow the system to automatically convert remaining balances into local fiat currency after the cutoff date. The process is being handled through the company’s digital wallet infrastructure, ensuring a structured exit without disrupting user funds. While the transition plan provides flexibility, it also signals a clear end to the token’s role within the platform.

The company has not provided a detailed explanation for discontinuing Mercado Coin, leaving room for speculation around the decision. Market observers suggest that factors such as regulatory uncertainty, operational complexity, and limited long term impact on user behavior may have influenced the move. At the same time, the broader crypto market has evolved significantly since the token’s launch, with companies now focusing more on infrastructure and payments rather than reward based tokens that rely on sustained user engagement.

Despite ending its proprietary token, MercadoLibre continues to show interest in digital assets as part of its financial strategy. The company still holds a notable position in bitcoin and supports crypto related features through its financial services arm. This indicates that while the rewards token model is being phased out, the firm is not exiting the crypto space entirely. Instead, it appears to be refining its approach to focus on areas with stronger long term utility and alignment with its core business operations.
